Just three days out from the State Election three of WA’s most
successful politicians will discuss WA female firsts as part of ECU’s
International Women’s Day celebrations.
They’ll join ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman to discuss
their experiences as successful leaders and how times have changed since the
University’s namesake made history as Australia’s first female MP.
The panel includes:
- The Hon. Professor Carmen
Lawrence, Australia’s first female Premier. - The Hon. Dr Elizabeth Constable,
WA’s first female independent MP and the first woman to serve over 20 years in
the Western Australian Parliament. - Dr Anne Aly MP, Australia’s first
woman of Arab background and first Egyptian-born Federal MP and ECU graduate.
As the only Australian University named after a woman, ECU celebrates
International Women’s Day each year with the Edith Cowan Memorial Lecture.
ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cobie Rudd, will pose
provocative questions to the panel, looking back at women in politics over the
past 100 years in the political sphere and what needs to happen to get a gender
balance.
Past speakers have included
- Diane Smith-Gander
- Her Excellency The Honourable
Kerry Sanderson AO
The official 2017 International Women’s Day campaign theme is
